Diffs and brakes

Postby westhedoorman » Tue May 02, 2017 9:40 pm

So I'm getting ready to start my diff and brake replacement this weekend. I got my parts all sorted out last weekend and loaded up on a work cart. I have been putting this off for quite a while because I have motivational challenges. I bought new diffs off eBay and had Auburns installed by a driveline shop here locally but the guy put the plug with the wires coming out of the bottom of the diff housing so I have to move it. Maybe I will post some pictures for both of you to look at.

New master cylinder. It is so much easier when you remove the fender well. I forgot to bleed the master cylinder so that caused some head scratching for a couple minutes. Those 12 ton jack stands are overkill weight wise but it is a pleasure to use them with their lift range you don't need wood blocks.

Done deal. New diff with Auburn locker, new rotors, new calipers, new pads, new half shafts and new flex brake lines. I bled the brakes, changed the hub oil and put the special fluid in the new diff and put the wheels back on.

West,
Why the Aubruns and not ARB? Figured you were drinking the cool-aid as well...
LOVE my flex lines! I should say Gunshow likes em. I don't get under my own truck.

I think the Auburns are a better choice since it's basically a stock configuration. The ARB is probably fine but I didn't want to add a compressor for it.
I'm a little overwhelmed right now at how tight the limited slip is in the Auburn though. I'm going to drive it around and see if it loosens up. If it does I will install the rear but if it doesn't I will probably put the old diff back in. I will probably put my truck up for sale within the next year and I don't want to compromise the drive ability.
I'm already planning my next truck which will be a Hmmwv which I could put my Auburn diffs into. I would also do a 2" body lift with 40"s on dual beadlock wheels and front and rear winches.
No cool aid for me. I am active on the HML but mainly because there is no action here. Maybe everybody is in Facebook groups or something but I don't do Facebook.
