97 HMC4 Tail Light Relay/Switch help needed.

Postby H1 GT » Sun Mar 12, 2017 1:16 pm

Hello all,

I have a 97 HMC4 that the tail lights are acting up, on. They seem to only want to work about 80% of the time. Not only is it a safety issue, but sometimes it takes a few minutes of lightly pumping the brakes just so I can get it out of park. It is acting like a relay is on its way out but I can't find anything in the service or parts manual about a relay for the tail lights. My second guess would be the switch on the brake pedal itself.

I figured I'd just come here and ask if/where there is a brake light relay before I try changing the switch.

Any info is appreciated.

The first thing I do when there is an electrical issue is to clean up all of the "grounds". I say "grounds" since our truck bodies are not a ground you should clean the connections on the positive and negative junction blocks under the dash in the drivers footwell area and in the engine compartment near the hydroboost. This costs nothing but a little time and frequently eliminates some little gremlins.

Check for power at the rear light connectors behind tge splach gaurds ( where the rear light wiring is cramed up). If you have power it is most likely a ground problem but if no power is there then its further up.
